January 22nd Notes -- Vocabulary, Phrases, Sentences

[JMR: Finally posted 15 January 2017 -- Touched on too many things here. ]

Notes from the January 2016 lesson

(New Years)

shrine    神社

temple    お寺

cathedral    大聖堂

お守り    amulet, talisman, charm

破魔矢    lucky arrow, arrow of fortune

How would you describe

When A, B    A の時・場合は B, A だったら B

When you break a mirror, you get seven years of bad luck.

I'm looking forward to working/studying/etc. with you again this year.

また、お正月には、 "I'm/We're looking forward to a [or another] good year with you."

If you please."
"If you would."

Let's have fun with this party.

I hope this doesn't inconvenience you too much.

I think we're gonna win this one!

(I think) it's going to be a good year.

また、 "We're going to have a good year."

"(I hope you) have a good year."

とは、 "Let's have a good year." 或いは、親しい仲間で "Let's make it a good year."

new year's resolution

My new year's resolution is to learn Spanish.

I have a new year's resolution to learn Spanish.

Fahrenheit
Celsius, centigrade

In America, we still use Fahrenheit scale temperatures (°F) instead of centigrade (°C).

I wrote a little discussion of Fahrenheit vs. Celcius several years ago, here.

Here are some examples:
例えば

103°F == 39.44°C
40°C == 104°F

In America, the normal body temperature is said to be 98.6°F, or 37°C.

In Japan, the normal (basal) body temperature is said to be a bit higher than 96.8°F (36°C).

37°C == 98.6°F
36°C == 96.8°F

If you say "98.6" in America, most people understand you to mean the healthy body temperature. There is even a song called "98.6" ("Ninety-eight Point Six") (here on youtube).

Here are the conversion formulae:
F = ((C × 9) ÷ 5) + 32
C = ((F - 32) × 5) ÷ 9

have a bad temper

Talking about Interests -- Clubs at School

Alex: Hi! Are you new here?

Louisa: Oh. Hello. Yeah. My name is Louisa.
    My dad just moved here for his job.

Amy: Well, I'm Amy, and this is my brother, Alex.

Louisa: Nice to meet you.

Jerry: I'm Jerry. I'm in the basketball club.
    Have you found a club yet?

Louisa: Club? Not yet.
    Back home, I was in the dance club.

Regina: Cool. I'm Regina.
    Are you interested in cheerleading?

Louisa: Cheerleading?
    No, I don't like to go to the games.

Jane: I'm in the Poets' Cards club.
    I'm Jane, by the way.

Louisa: Poets' Cards club? What's that?

George: I'm George, and I'm in the Poets' Cards club, too.
    We memorize famous lines from poems on cards.

Alex: Poets' Cards is a card game.
    They sit around while someone reads a line from a poem,
    and try to grab the card for that poem first.

Louisa: That sounds like an interesting way to learn literature.
    Is there a dance club?

Regina: We have a cheerleading dance club.
    They help with the cheerleading,
    but they also compete at performing cheerleadiing routines.

Louisa: Well, can I visit and watch a few clubs?

Jerry: Sure! We can show you around after school.

Amy: Mrs. Brown, our homeroom teacher,
    can get you a list of clubs.

Jane: And then we'll help you find them.

Louisa: Thanks.
